AI Tools Can Write Your Copy. But are they Right for Your Business?

Copywriting is essential to your marketing because it effectively communicates your brand’s message to your target audience. However, with the increasing use and development of artificial intelligence (“AI”) tools in marketing, keeping the human element in copywriting will serve your business well.

Today’s AI Tools for Copywriting

Over the past few years, several AI tools for copywriting have been developed that will assist with blog writing, website content, social media captions, and sales copy. 

 

Popular AI copywriting tools that you might see advertised include: 

Writers enter in keywords or write out sentences to describe the subject matter, and the tool will offer up suggestions through algorithms the tool has learned. AI tools improve over time as more people use them and the algorithm adjusts.

 

Many AI tools offer free promotional periods so that potential customers can sample the technology. After the trial, monthly or annual plans are available, based on the amount of copy you need. 

Connect with Your Audience Personally

While AI tools help writers and busy small business owners overcome initial writer’s block, they lack the ability to know your target audience – only you or your copywriter understands how to speak in the voice or tone that connects with your customers in an authentic way. 

 

ChatGPT is one of the newest and hottest tools in the AI copywriting space that is in beta testing right now. You can ask Chat GPT to write a blog for you (ex. “Write a blog about the top culinary schools in the United States.”), and you can receive a 200-300 word blog in a matter of seconds. This platform is all the rage, but still in development and is currently free of charge. 

 

But again, as with any AI tool, the output needs to be reviewed – computer-generated text can sound robotic or “stiff”, and you need to edit the copy to connect with your target audience. 

AI Tools Collaborate, Not Replace

Overall, marketing and social media professionals are excited about artificial intelligence in the copywriting space. In fact, many executives see AI tools as a collaborative partner rather than a competitor or even a replacement for their services. AI copywriting tools develop ideas for content creation and planning while saving both time and money in the creative process. 

 

Well-known companies such as Microsoft are embracing AI. For example, Microsoft just announced a “multi-billion dollar investment” in OpenAI, the maker of Chat GPT. Industry execs are buzzing at the idea of PowerPoint and an AI tool like Chat GPT working hand-in-hand to develop and uplevel the stodgy PPT presentations we have become accustomed to in the workplace. 


Even Gary Vaynerchuk (known to many as “Gary V”) stated in his latest newsletter, “I believe ChatGPT will create new possibilities for people who will take advantage of AI-generated text to aid in their creative processes. This isn’t a threat to creativity. It’s a partner to it … and I think it’s incredibly profound.”

Humans Still Create the Best Ideas

While artificial intelligence can learn about subjects through machine learning and algorithm updates, only a skilled copywriter has the ability to think creatively and develop unique, “out-of-the-box” ideas. 

For example, if your business is launching a brand new product, your copywriter can do A/B testing to see which sales landing page performs better for a target audience. Your marketing team can review the analytics, discuss ideas and suggestions, and tweak the copy so that you have a successful product launch. 

In other words, AI will jumpstart the creative process, but you, your copywriter, or your marketing team will see those ideas through to successful completion.

Using technology and automation in copywriting is valuable, and it’s a new tool that your business should consider using if your budget allows it. It’s quite possible that your copywriter already uses one of the tools mentioned here. It’s clear that the human element will remain in copywriting and digital marketing (including social media marketing). Still, AI tools will complement current copywriting practices and may even bring new ideas to life.
